Call for Nominations
 
The 2010 AAAS Philip Hauge Abelson Award
 
*Featuring a simpler nomination process, later deadline* 
 
The American Association for the Advancement of Science invites
nominations for the 2010 AAAS Philip Hauge Abelson Award.  The Award is
awarded annually either to: 
            · a public servant, in recognition of sustained exceptional
contributions to advancing 
science, or 
            · a scientist, whose career has been distinguished both for
scientific achievement and for 
other notable services to the scientific community.  
 
This annual award was established in 1985 by the AAAS Board of
Directors and consists of a plaque and an honorarium of $5,000.  The
winner will be selected by a five-member judging panel.  The 2010 Philip
Hauge Abelson Award will be presented at the AAAS Annual Meeting in
Washington, DC, February 17-21, 2011.  
 Recipients of the Award  
 
The 2009 recipient of the Abelson Award was Francis S. Collins,
Director, National Institutes of Health.  Dr. Collins was selected on
the basis of his extraordinary skills as a scientist, as a spokesperson
for the ethical and responsible use of science, as a communicator with
the public and policy makers, and for his pioneering leadership of
major, highly successful federal scientific initiatives.  Other
recipients have included:

2007     Burton Richter, Paul Pigott Professor Emeritus in the Physical
Sciences, Stanford

Engineering. 
2005     Norman R. Augustine, former Chairman and Chief Executive
